Urban transport takes on a new and exciting turn with Scania's NXT transportation system.
Extremely exciting news for the future of urban transportation: Scania has a new electric, self-driving urban concept vehicle.
Scania's new concept, called NXT, aims to ameliorate how we operate our transportation systems, improve environmental issues (or at least not worsen them), and increase productivity.
Here's how the Swedish company plans to do so: by using its new design, the transportation will have the flexibility to switch from daily morning and evening commute, delivering produce and goods during the day, and collecting rubbish at night.
A bold promise, and a fascinating innovative solution.
Efforts have been made by cities and companies worldwide to improve congestion and environmental issues, with a strong push on developing electric and autonomous cars at the forefront.
“NXT is a vision of the future for transport in cities. Several of these technologies have yet to fully mature but for us it’s been important to actually build a concept vehicle to visibly and technically demonstrate ideas of what is within reach,” said Scania’s President and CEO Henrik Henriksson.
“NXT is designed for 2030 and beyond while incorporating several cutting-edge features that are already available.”
In NXT, the body of the bus will be flexible, where the front and rear modules will be able to be fitted on and off, whenever required. For example, the bus can become a commuter vehicle in the morning, and a refuse collector at night and switching between these types of vehicles.
Henriksson continued: “We at Scania can’t redraw the entire transport system for cities. What we can do is inspire change and that is the idea behind NXT – to think about transport and vehicles in a different and sustainable way.”
The concept vehicle was displayed at the UITP Global Public Transport Summit in Stockholm from 10-12 June.
Spanning eight meters, the bus is created as one composite unit, keeping its weight to a limit. The batteries are placed underneath the floor, making use of otherwise dead space and maximizing weight distribution. As the vehicle will weigh less than eight tonnes, the range with current batteries is approximately 245 kilometers.
We have to wait a while until Scania's NXT vehicle hits the roads, but we look forward to that day.
